Control room has been functioning from 01.04.1961 while composite Coimbatore District, under the control of the District Crime Branch. From 1964, separate strength was sanctioned exclusively to Control Room from 1964, as per G.O. Ms. No. 3960, Home, Dated 17.11.1964. Full pledged Control Room in Coimbatore Urban district started functioning only after bifurcation of Coimbatore District during the year 1972.( Vide G.O. Ms. No. 269, Home, dated 17.06.1972).  

After the formation of Coimbatore City on 14.04.1990, the control room has designated as City Control Room.  A new two storey building to the extent of 4157 Square Feet was constructed as per the G.O. Ms.No. 33 Home (Modern) Department, dated 16.03.2005. The Control room is presently functioning in the first floor of the new building. A post of Assistant Commissioner of Police, Control Room was sanctioned as per the G.O.Ms.No.518, Home, (Pol.II) Department, dated 23.06.2005 for the supervision of Modern Control Room.  The Offices of the Assistant Commissioners of Police, Modern Control Room and the Inspector of Police, Technical Cell and the Inspector of Police BDDS are situated in the ground floor.  An air conditioned room is available in the ground floor of the new building which is used as a storage of the equipment of the Bomb detection and disposal squad.

The Modern Control room is provided with two master Control VHF sets 25 watts each with a facility to  contact Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode and the Nilgiris Districts using the repeater station mounted at the PRS ground Coimbatore. The Modern control room is having all the Technical upgradations that are available at the Modern Control room in Greater Chennai.  The 100 call centre with 5 ISDN-BRI lines and a customer database with voice recording system and GPS tracking which has a digital exchange for automatic call distribution to the 7 desktop for the incoming calls.  At present the Master server is at fault, has yet to be made good by entering AMC by the technical wing at Chennai, which, is now in progress.  Hence the utilization of the Modern Control room with these Hi-Tech System is now at snag.  Inspector of Police, Technical Cell has been instructed to get in touch with their Headquarter to get it ready with the execution of AMC for the restoration and utilization these services. 

The Control room is monitoring 14 hotlines Telephones directly linked with the importance Banks, Central prison and the Airport for an urgent contacts and emergency services.
